I like walking. And above all, I like walking in the snow.
Especially during or immediately after a good snowfall. I like to experience this alone. For me it is a wonderful experience. There is a great silence, even if in the end this silence is thunderous and decidedly pleasant. There is a great silence for the ears and for the spirit, in a world where noise, stress and agitation are the order of the day.
But there is not only silence, but so much oxygen. Pure oxygen. It serves to regenerate after being in contact with many people throughout the week.
Being alone in these conditions is not so difficult. Indeed, it is very easy. Because being alone in the end, if one is comfortable with himself, it is beautiful.
I like to walk where the trees are. When I walk, the trees become the characters of my stories and keep me company.
Trees are like people. They have a lot in common, although trees, unlike people, can always be trusted. These souls have much to tell and each tree, just like people, has its own story, its own personality. And just like with people, we need to find the correct spot for a beautiful portrait.
I like to communicate with trees and in this situation, immediately after the snowfall, it becomes easier for me to immortalize them in a photograph. Trees become my models and I try to listen to what their fragile souls have to tell me.
And if someone thinks that to have a good result you have to have many colors, I give importance to the saying “less is more”. For a result that satisfies me. A minimal shot that, moreover, does not need much of post production. Heard, seen and taken.
What do you think are the TWO most impactful features that make your image a good photograph? Don’t be shy!
I do not know exactly.
There are photographers who certainly have a better technique and above all know how to use post production better. But I believe that the important thing in photography is not so much the quality or what camera you have, but what you can put in your photography.
I like fantasy and above all I like to create. I like to take a photograph of a detail of a thing visible to everyone, but that only my eye has seen.
At the beginning I photographed many panoramas and I still like doing it, but started giving me less and less satisfaction. I want to use my intuition. Sometimes I see something and I’m sure. Other times I see things that attract me and I photograph, but I’m not sure. Often those photographs weeks or months apart take shape and become something unique.
And I understand that my instincts had not been wrong. As Henri Cartier-Bresson said, you have to put your mind, eyes and heart into photography. I prefer a photo that is not perfect, but that makes me excited and that surprises me.
If you would be able to make this photo once again, what would be the ONE thing you would like to do better or different?
In this case I would not change anything. I saw this photo and loved it even before I took it. I was lucky enough to shoot in an ideal situation, because even if it seems easy, with snow and fog it is not easy to find and resume such clear lines. View, loved, taken!

Insightful piece. I love the fact that post production and technical issues are second for Massimo. As Ansel Adams said “The most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it” Thank you

I keep coming back to this stark yet creatively composed image. There is much in the little that is there.

Love your photography, philosophy, and your love and understanding of trees! Being alone is so reinvigorating to me and I suspect for you, also. Look forward to seeing more of your creations!
