“Untitled” by Lin Blythe

This is an image from my project “Passenger” which records my journeys to and from Liverpool on the Cross River Bus.

The route takes in a variety of landscapes from rural suburbia, through the Mersey Tunnel and in to the city centre. Observing the passing scenes through condensation covered windows has been an inspiration.

I’ve been involved in the visual arts throughout my adult life with a particular interest in painting and drawing. Condensation obscures and distorts, often emulating the qualities I admire in expressive artwork. Colour is another passion, the rush hour traffic, the shop and street lights provide a vibrant palette which adds to the appeal.

I’m a compulsive photographer, I cast a wide net, often taking hundreds of images during a return journey. Evaluation is a crucial part of my process and more often than not a large percentage of my images are deleted. As a project develops I strive to find better versions or a new slant on what I’ve already created.

In the meantime, what could have been a tedious and protracted journey has become an experience I thoroughly enjoy. “Passenger” is part of my story, it conjures up fond memories of conversations with strangers, curious to know what I’m doing and with the kindly, well intentioned passenger who leaned over to clear the condensation from the window so that I could see more clearly. This is a happy place so, for now, my work on this project continues.

What do you think are the TWO most impactful features that make your image a good photograph? Don’t be shy!

It’s gutsy and in your face.

If you would be able to make this photo once again, what would be the ONE thing you would like to do better or different?

I would wait for the bus to stop or choose a route with fewer potholes!
