Living in Florida, you see people at the beach picking up only perfect seashells. I have been picking up the less-than-perfect ones and shooting them. It is a series I call “not perfect but perfect”.
I shoot them on a black background, much like the documentation photos in scientific journals. I try to light them as if they are sculptures and use the shape and form of the imperfections to make them interesting to look at.
To me, the difference between a photograph and an image is that you stop at the surface of a photograph, with an image, you go past the surface, both visually and emotionally. I hope I’m making images for people to enjoy. I have been addicted to photography for 51 years.
What are the TWO most impactful features that make your image a good photograph? Don’t be shy!
The lighting and subject matter.
If you could make this photo again, what would be the ONE thing you would like to do better or differently?
I tend not to revisit things; I either work it till it works or move on.
