PART 3 – FEBRUARY 26, 2023
CASE CARLINI

This is a small hamlet, first mentioned in 1836 with the inscription “Carline” written on one of the houses. They are old farmhouses on the Highlands of Asiago in northern Italy and are my subject of choice for the 3rd episode of Artist-in-Residence. Partly abandoned and in disrepair, my focus has been on trying to photograph them during all 4 seasons of the year.

What a great interview! Your work is beautiful! I particularly love the photo of the darker tree trunks in the forest with some smaller trees with pale green leaves amongst them!! I am also very drawn to trees and roots, mosses and many parts of the forest so I am going to be very excited to follow this project! I feel like trees are the closest thing in nature to people, with their own personalities and stories, which is always interesting photograph! When you go out to shoot, do you have a fairly specific plan in mind of what you want to capture or find? I struggle with this approach so I’m interested in your thoughts on this! Do you find the photo, or does the photo find you?

Hi Suzanne, thank you very much for your kind words. Yes I agree with you, trees are special and more valued than ever today! To answer your question, I usually always plan my outing/shoots looking at the weather conditions which are very important in my work. I usually go out at dawn/sunrise and then towards the late afternoon during golden hour. If my chosen location doesn’t work out, I’ll move away and try something else. I’m fairly flexible like this and it usually pays off by bringing something home in the bag! Have a great evening!

Dear Adriana, I cannot begin to tell you how excited I was to see your video. I am also a woman landscape photographer and so many of the presentations I see are of the work of male landscape photographers. What a breath of fresh air.! About a year ago someone asked me what was my favorite photography subject. Without thinking I said “trees,” so I think we may be kindred spirits.
Your work is elegant and ethereal. You used the word “pretty” but I agree with you that it was an inadequate term. I will follow your work and I look forward to seeing your upcoming posts.

As I said in my interview with Scott, I like to “feminize” my work, which in a way makes it mine. Are you on social media, if so please send me your links. Have a super weekend!

Hi Adriana. First of all I have to say that your work is breathtaking. Your landscape photographs are really gorgeous!. Not only for the places you photograph but also for the light and colors you capture, so overwhelming! I’m not going to ask for technical issues. I’m much more interested in your personal experience when you are facing such beauty in nature. Have you ever felt disappointed when you get home and see that the photographs you have taken do not cover the beauty that surrounded you? I mean, have you ever felt so overwhelmed by beauty that you were afraid of not being able to capture that grandiosity? Again, congratulations for your wonderful work!

Hi Monica, thank you for your kind words, I really appreciate them. I don’t really get into the technical stuff, as it can become an ongoing debate etc. on what camera, what lens, what filter blah blah. That’s not why I photograph at all, why I do what I do is firstly because I love landscapes and am greatly influenced by the great British landscape painters like Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable and I just like holding my equipment and photographing…..Sometimes when I download my photos on my PC, I do get disappointed, but I found by
leaving them “sit” a bit and working on them later is a good exercise. Have a great weekend!

Thank you Ben for your comments! I firmly believe that as a landscape photographer getting away from the iconic shots freshens things up a bit. It’s definitely not about scoring likes or winning competitions. There are some photographers that I know who are only interested in getting one accolade after the other without any interaction with fellow photographers. Sad, we should share more.

Loved your interview. As somebody of roughly the same age I was astonished at how many comments you made were so in line with my own perceptions especially with regard to denying oneself the opportunities to take the classic views of any particular location. It’s so much more difficult than it sounds as I’m guessing that how we got into this in the first place. Lovely images by the way.

This is a great interview and I cannot wait for the rest of the series. I do appreciate your thoughts about how we should recognize and perhaps respect the colors and the elements of the place. I too enjoy taking photographs when it’s foggy and rainy, but your photographs are able to capture this very ethereal feeling of the landscape itself. 🙂 I look forward to learning more from you!

Thank you so much for discussing your work and sharing so generously. What an inspirational body of work. I can see your classical influences and I’d love to know how long it typically takes to process your images. When I take mine out of camera they are often in need of softening and it can take some time to get it the way I want it. I know you don’t want to spend too long on the technical side but I would love more information on your processing if that’s ok. Thank you!

Hi Louise, thank you for your question. I import my photos into LR and do some basic tweaking such as white balance, white and black correction and some work in the calibration module. I move into PS where I sharpen the photos, maybe use the Orton effect depending on the photo. I also dodge and burn in PS. Having said this I always stress to my students that the shot needs to be good in camera first which is the starting point for any post processing work.

Adriana, I enjoyed your interview with Scott and learning about your multicultural roots and how you came to photography. Your passion for landscapes and the forces of nature that inform their beauty is manifest in your artistry. The photographs that you shared in Part 2 are stunning works of art. And that’s no doubt due, in part, to your willingness to get out early or stay late to catch the most dramatic light. The weathered structures give “story” to the beauty and harshness of the landscapes they inhabit.

I don’t need to know the technical stuff to appreciate your work, but as an amateur photographer, I am curious about your camera, lens, and post-processing workflow. Thank you for taking us on this journey.

Hi Richard, thank you very much for your comments, I really appreciate them! I am old school and do not believe in rushing out and buying constant new stuff. I have a Canon 5D III (which is fantastic in my opinion for landscapes) and what I think is the holy trinity of lenses for a landscape photographer: a wide angel (17-40), a med tele zoom (24-104) and a large tele zoom (100-400) All are from the Canon stable. I also use a carbon fibre tripod from Benro. My PP is done first in LR and then I move over to PS for sharpening and a few other tweaks. Have a super day!

Thank you for your kind comments Mark. Unfortunately it is so difficult to get out there, and in todays social media madness where hardly anybody reads, they just use a flick of their finger to scroll over things, we tend to miss out on a lot of content out there. I also feel if you are not a Youtuber etc, it is difficult to get people to follow you. Do I do a sponsored ad on FB or Insta?? No I don’t think so as they will just trap you into an ever spending cycle. These obviously are my thoughts…. Have a super day!

I’ve just enjoyed the third episode, and I love the four season perspective of this beautiful area. It never occurred to me before that the lush fields of dandelions impart flavour to one of my favourite cheeses, so I have learned something new by this opportunity to sort of be present with you in these images. I finished watching the third installment of your AiR this morning. Wonderful work with beautiful lighting. I shared your frustration with critics who claim you were shooting the same scene over and over. As my own photography matures, I have come to understand the difference between the objects I shoot and the subject of my images. Yes, you have four photos of the same objects. But the subject of your images is not the objects, but how light interacts with those objects in four different seasons The plus-one portrait was beautiful as well. I have learned much from your works and interview with W. Scott Olsen. Thank you.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with going back to the same place time and time again. Each shot will be different, never the same, and anyone suggesting otherwise is demonstrating their ignorance. You cannot let negative comments get you down, people making such comments will just sap your energy and well being if you allow them. Your images are stunning and I completely agree that it is good to get away from the usual iconic shots however, I am curious to understand how you add a touch of femininity to an image; and that is probably me showing my ignorance. I see a good photograph as a good photograph regardless of who took it. And like you I prefer to take a tripod wherever I go and will use one the majority of the time.

Hi Kevin, thank you for your encouraging comments. I think what I meant as a more feminine touch was maybe my post processing technique which involves not sharpening the whole photo, only selected areas and using the orton effect to some degree in specific areas. I’m glad that there is someone else who always uses a tripod!!!

Like others here, I admire your use of light and weather.
I, like you, like to photograph abandoned places. I do it usually during vacations in far places as my daily vicinity do not support such available places. For this reason I have to “play” with whatever light available at the short time I have in each place. Maybe, now, after retiring, I have to think how to get more time in places I want to work with.

Thank you Adriana for taking me on a most wonderful journey. Your photographs in the last section are truly inspiring and so beautifully atmospheric, allthe more so having you by my side explaining not only the history of the area, but your feelings about each image. I have thoroughly enjoyed being with you for the last month and will certainly be watching out for more of your wonderful photography in the future. Thank you.

I finally had a chance today to view your 5 sessions in its entirety, and what a pleasure it was. Gorgeous images made in special places. I especially liked your (in many ways) simple and thoughtful approach to making landscape and tree photographs. Your comments were insightful and helped explain your style. I am inspired to get out and photograph more in the countryside. Also, keep up the good work, Tomasz.

Thank you very much for your wonderful comment Richard. I’m very old school in my landscape photography journey, don’t like fashions/trendy photography and am happy doing things my way. I’m all for pure natural landscapes as I see it. Have a great day!

I have finally had time to view and hear your interviews, photographs and videos. I have to say that Im very impressed with all of your shots, the approach you take to capturing the stunning images and the moods you have captured. Luckily you live in a place with most beautiful landscapes and the opportunities appear rich. I also like your unique way of only/mostly shooting the soft and moody scenes in misty conditions. Thank you for explaining the detail behind all your images. Context and story is everything to an image. A little bit about your shooting technique has also been useful for me. Thanks for your time spent explaining your images and processing techniques.

Hi, Adriana (also a Portuguese name), just to say I return again and again to your last video presentation as I don´t get tired of seeing your beautiful photographs. The colours are very meaningful if I can express this way. They do convey emotions trough subtlety and a sense of time;. this is what I feel. I don’t remember seeing colours in such a rendition as yours. Forgive me my poor English. I adore the way you work colour. Or should say work with your colour – very personal and intense your work is. Thank you so much. Stay well.

Thank you very much Ricardo for your lovely comment. I think that my colour in my shots are influenced by my life in Africa where colours are always intense. On the other hand, I also like subtle colours of mist etc. Have a wonderful day!
