“Between Space” by Brawi Santoso

I love wondering around with my camera.

This photo is from my recent series of urban photography of everyday buildings and spaces both outdoor and indoor in my urban environment however without the human figure in it.

The quest is to capture an image that convey the sense of emptiness.

I was on my regular walk on the usual quiet Saturday afternoon. As usual, I had my camera with me. I came across this space with another building just right behind it, in between the space. I started exploring it from different spots, observing where the light falls on it. It was late in the mid-afternoon; it was during winter, and the sun was low and slight behind me. It created this beautiful soft light filling out the space in between those buildings.

In general, when approaching a potential subject, I do not have a preconceived idea or an image in mind. When I attracted to a scene, I would stand around for some time, walk around it to see what interested me in the first place. Very often I would walk away without taking any photos and to return or walk past the same spot again, days or weeks later and find the image that I was originally attracted too.

With my urban photography series, I usually like to use lines, shapes, patterns, and light. I am particularly paying attention to using lines especially of the edges of my frame in designing my photos. Another element that I like to use is the play between light and shadow which adding a layer to the image.

My urban photography is generally in strong colors but for this one, I saw the scene in a very unsaturated color but not a black and white, it only contained a various grey tone across the image.

What do you think are the TWO most impactful features that make your image a good photograph? Don’t be shy!

Composition and the lines of the edges of the frame.

If you would be able to make this photo once again, what would be the ONE thing you would like to do better or different?

I walk past this place regularly; I really do not know how to approach this image again. Maybe if they would paint those walls in very bright color , I would probably capture it in a different way.

I like the simplicity of the image. Black. White. Shades of gray. Smoothness of the side walls vice the textures of the brick wall and tile roof.

This photo is very appealing to the eye. Wonderful soft light on quite sharp angular buildings a juxtaposition whichI really like. Really like this shot.
