“By Three” by Olga Ochocka-Matłacz

I am fascinated by the beauty of the things that are completely banal to most of us. I’m trying to find patterns, some kind of harmony or interesting elements at places that people don’t find really interesting – so to say a “B-sides”.

This empty parking lot at the mall gave me a sense of a liminal, clear and peaceful space with just few single clouds in the sky. I also truly loved the colors of the environment – that’s when I decided to capture it.

I’m all about New Topographics movement and landscapes visibly altered by humans. There is a certain beauty in places that we pass every single day and don’t pay much attention to them, or find them ugly/borning. I’m sure people that were passing by were wondering why am I even there, trying to take a picture with my phone. It also seemed so ridiculous, yet intriguing to me that the carts couldn’t fit the destined place.

Most of the elements of that frame can be divided by three, thus the title of my picture. It’s very pleasant and challenging to find them all in that technically simple shot. I’m honestly not the best at describing things I’ve done. I just see an opportunity and capture it with whatever gear I have on me, which is just my mobile phone most of the time. What else can I say?

I’m unbelievably flattered that it was chosen to be featured as I didn’t expect it at all. I love photography and it’s my main hobby that helps me “take off” from the daily routine, boring errands and problems. That’s basically why I desperately try to find interesting things that surrounds me, to make my space more comfortable and enjoyable.

What do you think are the TWO most impactful features that make your image a good photograph? Don’t be shy!

Most of the elements are “threes”. Three lines, three spots, three vents. Also the harmony of colors bring a peace of mind. That one, single cloud gives this shot a certain mood as well. It’s very hard to judge my own photo because I’d never expected to be featured!

If you would be able to make this photo once again, what would be the ONE thing you would like to do better or different?

Honestly? Nothing. I like it the way it is.
