I enjoy walking the streets of my hometown of Totnes and nearby towns along the coast and inland in Devon and Cornwall, searching for interesting street scenes, people, life, and reflections.
I prefer to work in black and white it feels so timeless and yet so impactful.
For this photo, I was casually walking the streets of Teignmouth, a seaside town,
hoping for some candid photography.
Teignmouth is home to quirky alley ways and old fashioned streets so it’s ideal for interesting images. There are some very colourful characters there too!
I spotted the t-shirts hanging on the pipe and the gentleman and his old-fashioned cap, and I was about to click, and then the lady walked through as he turned to the right, and I caught the moment!
I thought I had caught something special and was really pleased when I downloaded the photograph later in the day.
You don’t see many older gentleman wearing flat caps anymore and the older lady appeared of a certain genre so it was a serendipidous moment.
Having been an amateur photographer intermittently over the years, I feel I have settled in and found my style after years of experimenting.
This particular photograph illustrates the type of photography I find myself drawn to again and again.
My very first photograph was taken when I was about ten years old – and l still have it! (The first operational hovercraft. SRN1, taken on the beach at Southsea, me Portsmouth). My first ‘serious’ camera was a Nikon FM, followed by an FE. Eventually going digital with a D80, D200, D7000, D7100, and various lenses before the weight of it all caught up with me!! It was then that l decided to change to Fujifilm. I never have any regrets; I just love my X-T2!
What are the TWO most impactful features that make your image a good photograph? Don’t be shy!
The t-shirts randomly hanging on the wall and the timing of the lady walking through.
If you could make this photo again, what would be the ONE thing you would like to do better or different?
If the gentleman in the cap was looking straight at the camera, it could have been interesting.

Lovely shot. I like this minimalist approach. The composition is at the top. Lovely tone.

I live in a small town in northern England and these days there is a general distrust of photographers on the street, much less so in big cities.I do however photograph and when asked what I am doing, I am honest and explain my work. More often than not they are ok with it but there are exceptions.
Back in the ‘old days’ people in public were a lot more accepting of photography and there was a certain level of respect for photographers…something I fear has been abused and now is less prevalent.
