“Lockdown Scenario” by Santanu Dey

Humans have evolved to be social creatures. They are wired to live in interactive groups. Being isolated from family, friends and colleagues can be unbalancing and traumatic for most people and can result in short or even long-term psychological and physical health problems.

When one looks at masses of people trapped in fear and uncertainty, many of them high on anxiety, depression and frustration, it is a volcanic situation which can be triggered off with any little provocation.

The image depicts a story behind Coronavirus and its impact on people. From cities under lockdown to most affected communities, I look at how the people are desparately trying to be normal as the outbreak of the deadly virus COVID-19 affects lives around the world.

Outside, on our terrace, there is an area to play with the little ones of our apartment. Every evening the little children are there to enjoy their time. It is not possible for me to join them every day as I am a service holder and I have to attend my office, but at the weekend I am trying to do so without any fail to enjoy these evenings with the little buds.

It was exactly one of such evenings when I took this photograph. Suddenly, I saw a little boy raising his hands to play with his mate and I immediately imagined this frame. Unfortunately I was not there with my camera, but luckily I had my mobile with me so I captured this frame after several attempts.

In my image the viewer can find two birds sitting on a bar, maintaining perfect social distancing. The human hand in the left of the frame placed in such a way that it can tells a story behind everything. It seems to be free like bird and represents life as we knew it before. The dramatic clouds are there to depict the horrible story that one can forget but not deny. The overall frame is a story of juxtaposed life that we are facing now as everyone tries to be free despite the deadly threat of the virus.

What do you think are the TWO most impactful features that make your image a good photograph? Don’t be shy!

Story, framing and execution.

If you would be able to make this photo once again, what would be the ONE thing you would like to do better or different?

I would like to capture the same scene using my camera.

Insight into a relatable scenario. The struggle to overcome an almost unbearable indefinitely stretched grim everyday life with whatever is at disposal is prominent in the image. The mood along with the render captures it all.
