“Phylactère” by Daniel Thibault

I have done my college years studying in arts and history of arts. I’m a big fan oh the Pre-Raphaelites painters, specially Dante Gabriel Rosetti, Edward Burne Jones, William Morris and John Everett Millais.

This shooting with Phylactère Rayna (the model on this photo) was meant to be a tribute to the painter, Dante Gabriel Rosetti, and his works with Jane Morris, the model (Jane was also the wife of William Morris).

So we have both , Phylactère and me, studied the style of Rosetti and his works with Jane Morris. Phylactère is a very experienced model and she was easily able to render Morris’ play and gesture, sometimes nearly resembling the “Art Nouveau” style. We’ve tried to respect the color palette of Rosetti and his style, his way of framing as much as possible.

The inclusion of textures in the clothes was mandatory, we didn’t have a lot of accessories. The lighting set-up was very simple: one bulb (I’m not working with flashes, my experience being lighting engineer for comedy shows), one umbrella and a little black curtain to create and control shadows. We used a neutral grey background, I was planning to add some textures in post-processing but I think it was not necessary.

The studio is small and I had to work very close to Phylactère. It was a 2 hours, fast-paced, shooting with Phylactère constantly changing dresses, colour themes, hair dresses and make-up. We didn’t want to replicate any of Rosetti’s painting but to understand his way, style and themes. At the end, I think we have succeeded.

What do you think are the TWO most impactful features that make your image a good photograph? Don’t be shy!

I think that the lighting is good and the composition too, but Phylactère’s resemblance with Jane Morris and her ability to render Morris’ play is the key element here.

If you would be able to make this photo once again, what would be the ONE thing you would like to do better or different?

I would take time to put a bit more nuances in the lighting.

What comes across in this shot, more than anything else, for me at least, is the sense of attachment to your model, it’s strong in that sense. I’m a big fan of less is more, so the simplicity of set up really appeals. Simple and evocative.. Lovely.

Excellent portrait and beautiful lighting. The pose that Phylactère has slipped into is so powerful, one can feel the tension.
