“Rooflines” by Steven Millman

Like with the majority of my images, I picked an area to visit and explore it with my camera. This particular image was taken from the Blue Heron Bridge, which spans the waterway between the barrier island of Singer Island, Florida and the mainland of Riviera Beach, Florida.

There are a lot of high rise buildings in the area. This image is a section of the roof of the “Loggerhead Club”. Being on the bridge gave me a different perspective of the roof lines, similar to a bird’s eye view.

It was a very nice, clear, bright, sunny morning. I was immediately drawn to the complimentary colors of the different shapes against the vivid blue sky. I knew I had something worth working.

I worked the scene until I had many different exposures and angles to use. For the most part, I am usually drawn to very graphic colors, shapes, textures, lines and light. I like to take everyday objects and scenes and try to make them visually interesting. It forces me to see things in a different way. I don’t always succeed, but most of the fun is getting there. It’s the journey that keeps me going.

What do you think are the TWO most impactful features that make your image a good photograph? Don’t be shy!

To me the two most impactful features of this image are the color and the lines. As a photographer, I am responsible for everything in the image. I did a lot of cropping, and playing with the composition to achieve the final image. I find that being proficient in both image capture and post production goes a long way to make one a complete photographer.

If you would be able to make this photo once again, what would be the ONE thing you would like to do better or different?

I used a DSLR with a kit lens for this image. I wish small cameras and short lenses had more distortion control on exposures like this. Since the lines are so important in this image, I did a fair amount of post production to make the lines work.

    Very nice image, Steven!
We may be kindred spirits in our affection for color, patterns, geometric shapes, lines and use of space. I also like that the image is very tidy in its composition. Overall, the shapes are blocked out in ordered layers,- and within the layers, the lines are straight and true.

You credit your gear, image processing software, and patience. I think that there is a lot to be said for the role of patience in making pictures. Certainly, opportunity plays a role as well,- but opportunities usually require taking the time and effort to deliver on them.

    Smartly done, sir.

    Hello Steven,
I bought some used frames at a thrift store in Arvada, Colorado, and in one of them was a print of one of your photos, “Faith” (Edition 2/Open Edition). I was able to locate you by doing an online search of some of the info that you included on the Certificate of Authenticity. Thought I’d contact you to see if you’d like me to send this print to you.
