The “Someday” Project by Desiree Day

For many, many years, this circa 1970 VW pop-top camper van has been sitting in the yard. In 1985, my partner found the van for a bargain of $150, and drove it home with the idea of making it road worthy once again.

I first met the van in the early 1990’s. I love to photograph the old, the abandoned, the rusty and moss covered homes, barns, and machinery that have remained in exactly the same place as they were when forsaken for unknown reasons. Stuck in a time and place with old tales to tell, they bring much to the imagination.

I also love the shiny and new, modern and stark but live in an area where this aesthetic doesn’t exist. I live in Tug Hill Plateau in the Hamlet of Osceola, New York. Located just west of the Adirondacks, this area is known to get snowfalls of 200 of 400 inches of snow a year.

The contrast of seasons in this area makes me appreciate the summer months all the more. One morning a couple of weeks ago, I stepped outside to discover the sunlight drifting over the van and stopped to photograph the dappled sun and shadow.

This image recalls times past for me. Recalls projects never finished, good intentions. This photo reminds me of ideas that I have experienced, contemplated and formed, only to reform these ideas over and over again. Friendships made forever and a few lost among the way. These recalled times also bring soft smiles and stories, some true and some not. Stories that recall an era I don’t want to return to, and at the same time one I am glad to have experienced.

As the aging and changing patina continue to bring new dimensions to the van over time, I love to document this process with my photographs now and again.

What do you think are the TWO most impactful features that make your image a good photograph? Don’t be shy!

The morning light and the subject matter.

If you would be able to make this photo once again, what would be the ONE thing you would like to do better or different?

Maybe change the color tones of the photo.

Lovely picture and a great story. We all have unfinished projects but many are in our heads while this is a beautiful, solid reality you can photograph. As for the colour tones those pastel shades are just right for a fading idea 🙂 Thanks for sharing

Lovely picture! I have a similar picture but of an upright piano left out in the garden. Might post it one day.
