“There Will Be Light” by Oliver Ammerschuber

I try to spend as much time as possible in forests. The magic of a forest, the peace and also the strength that emanates from it are unique and important for me to draw strength. All the more so as our world, our lives become ever more restless. I have the great fortune to be in the middle of a large forest within 5 minutes and able to indulge in my two great passions there. Forest walks and photography!

The most beautiful time there for me is the morning. Very special magical lighting conditions can be captured. Like in my picture!

On this morning, it was November 2018 so already late autumn, it was a little foggy and the sun was not yet visible. I went out on the off chance to maybe capture an appealing scene. But I could not have guessed that today was my first visit to the “candy store”. Candy store? Yes, I have read about colleagues who use the term for such a scene, when the sun breaks spectacularly through the fog. The photographer feels like a little kid in the candy store. I don’t know if that’s a common term, but I like the comparison very much!

Suddenly I noticed that in a dense area of the forest not a hundred meters from me the first light of the morning was breaking through the fog. I ran over, already a little excited.
There before me lay a sun dappled forest in autumnal garb. I didn’t know where to look first to take a photograph. You never know how long this magical state will last. 2 minutes? 20 minutes?

I was lucky that my “candy store” was open long enough to take a number of different pictures with various lenses. Happy and exhausted, I walked home afterwards. The excitement of looking at these pictures at home was already setting in. But first my “normal work” beckoned.

All in all, I have been able to experience various candy stores in the forest or in the mountains since then. It is always a very special and magical moment! But I will never forget my first visit…!

What do you think are the TWO most impactful features that make your image a good photograph? Don’t be shy!

The combination of autumnal forest with its great colors, paired with the first rays of the rising sun make this photo something special.

If you would be able to make this photo once again, what would be the ONE thing you would like to do better or different?

The only thing I would improve, for me personally, would be my excitement! In such special situations I become captivated by a childlike excitement in which I sometimes tend not to control the settings of my camera properly, but just simply shoot away. Thus it can happen that the settings of my Fujifilm are sometimes not quite optimal… But with this picture everything just clicked.
