Oriana Poindexter is an American-Italian photographic artist and marine scientist whose work sits beautifully between observation, research, and wonder. With a background in Visual Arts from Princeton University and Marine Biodiversity & Conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, she brings together two ways of seeing: the precise curiosity of science and the more intuitive, poetic language of photography.

Much of her practice grows directly from the ocean. She dives, photographs, collects marine specimens, and uses both traditional and alternative photographic processes to create works that feel like visual records of fragile, shifting ecosystems. Her images are not simply about the sea as a subject, but about our relationship with it — especially at a time when marine environments are changing so rapidly.

Poindexter’s work has been published by Smithsonian Magazine, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, and exhibited in museums and galleries including Laguna Art Museum, Oceanside Museum of Art, and the Center for Fine Art Photography. Her recent projects, including The Blue Forest, continue to translate the life of kelp forests and marine biodiversity into tactile, luminous photographic experiences.
