This location is only a couple of miles from my house, so I have photographed it several times over the years. Last winter, I drove by it when the snow was covering the fields, and of course, I did not have my camera, so I went back home and got my gear.
I photographed several different versions, but when I got back and uploaded the files, I kept going back to this frame (I only shot one frame), and I knew this was the version I had been looking for. I cropped out some of the sky to make a panorama, and that was my final version. The empty fields, the long tree-lined drive with no home in sight, and the gray sky gave me a feeling of loneliness.
I have lived here in Owensboro, Kentucky (on the Ohio River about 100 miles downriver from Louisville, KY my entire life. I am 89 years young, and started my photography journey in 1970. I started out doing weddings on weekends, and eventually operated a photography studio, doing portraits and commercial work.
During all that time, I was photographing landscapes here in Kentucky and worldwide. I have had several one-man shows, and have been a part of other shows at our local Museum of Art (the second largest in Kentucky), and have several photographs in their permanent collection. I taught black & white darkroom photography for several years at a local university. I retired from my studio several years ago, and currently just wander around photographing scenes that interest me. I do sell photographs on my website and locally at a couple of gift shops.
What are the TWO most impactful features that make your image a good photograph? Don’t be shy!
The snow, which is covering the fields, and the overcast day.
If you could make this photo again, what would be the ONE thing you would like to do better or differently?
I would have taken a few more images at this distance.
